Do I Need a Theory Test?

If you are a learner driver then you have to take and pass your driving theory test at a Surrey driving theory test centre before you can book your practical driving test. However if you already have a driving licence you might not have to take the theory test again if all you want to do is add another category to your driving licence.

If you are a UK licence holder

If you have a UK licence and you wish to add an additional category of vehicle to it such as a motorbike licence, then you will need to take and pass a new driving theory test for that category. You can do this at any Surrey driving theory test centre.

However, if all you want to do is upgrade your licence within the same vehicle category you will not normally need to take another theory test. For example, if you have a full automatic licence and you want to take a manual car test then you will not have to take another driving theory test. Of course it is your responsibility to make sure you have the correct licence for the vehicle you wish to drive. If you are not sure then contact the DSA at www.dsa.gov.uk or the Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA).

If you are a foreign licence holder

If you hold a valid Community licence and you are visiting Great Britain, you can drive as long as your licence remains valid. The category of vehicle you wish to drive must be shown on your licence.

The EAA community countries are;

Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Cyprus, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, United Kingdom.

Licences outside Europe

If you hold a full driving licence issued outside the EEA it may still be possible to exchange it for an equivalent UK Driving Licence. In such a case, you will need to contact the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) and they will advise you according on your request. If you can not exchange your foreign licence then you will have to apply for a UK provisional licence and the take the appropriate driving theory test for the category vehicle you require.
